Working at CMC

Hi again! Sorry I haven't had a chance to write on here for ages, but I've got a good few posts planned to put up here very soon. I've just finished work experience with CMC, a medical communications (medcomms) company based in Macclesfield. As I've done with previous work experiences, I thought it might be useful to have a log of the work I completed on here - for anyone considering working with CMC, and for personal future reference. If you'd like to read about other work experiences I've completed, click here for Havas Lynx and here for The Guardian & The Observer.

CMC is under the umbrella of McCann Complete Medical. Within this group, there are internal agencies that specialise in supporting healthcare companies in different ways, such as medcomms, regulatory work and strategic consultancy. A key role of CMC is to work with doctors to support the development of accurate scientific communicative content. This can be in the form of manuscripts for clinical trials, information for symposia, posters for conferences, amongst others!

Whilst at CMC, I had a taster of a variety of different roles. I was also scheduled in each day to talk to lots of different people, each working in different areas. This was so helpful for me to fully understand how the company works, as well as how different aspects of a project come together.

I was able to work on a variety of different projects, such as writing abstracts for manuscripts, proofreading posters, configuring key points, sitting in on author calls etc etc! I also attended the MedComms Networking event in Manchester - I have previously attended with friends, but it was really interesting to go this time with an agency and help represent CMC. (I really recommend this event if you're interested in medcomms! Find out about more events here).

At the MedComms Networking event!

Like in other work experiences, it was great that I was trusted to work independently and produce work of my own. Compared to other work experiences I've completed, I found this one particularly eye-opening in terms of learning the structure of a medcomms agency. This kind of info is really useful for in the future when I may be deciding which aspect of the industry to apply for jobs in!

Before starting my work experience with CMC, I expected to enjoy the writing side of work most, but I was surprised by how much I also enjoyed the editing process. I’m now more open to different careers within the industry.

Have you completed work experience with CMC or any of McCann's other agencies? How was your experience? Let me know in the comments!

  2. That's the beauty of trying out new companies, you can learn new skills and try out new tasks that you might not have before. Who knows, you might have a new career ahead of you in editing! :)

    1. Exactly! You could be right, thanks for commenting! xx
