Mind-Controlled Bionic Limbs

Another quick post! Last week the government announced that it plans to invest £5bn in developing different types of technology for bionic limbs. The hope is that these will allow people to feel sensations in their bionic limb!

The technology has already been tested in Austria, where 3 patients who underwent the procedure can now pick up objects and complete menial tasks such as doing up buttons on a shirt with artificial hands. The image below explains how the technology works (albeit a very simplified version!)

The research is still in it's early days however, and at the moment the signal produced by the muscle is not strong enough to make the damaged muscles work as normal and on their own. Instead, the artificial hand and muscles work together, which means only a weak signal is required.

Click here for a video from the BBC website that explains the work that will be carried out here in the UK in order to develop the technology further.

  1. Super interesting post - that's my science for today :)

    1. Thanks! Glad you liked the post :)

  2. Wow this is amazing!! I can't wait to see what they'll be able to do in the future :)
